The vicious world destroyed my soul—
Poetry silently helps me rebuild it.
I have decided that my greatest achievement will be turning my life, my deepest passions and interests into my career. Turning my skills and already-valuable assets into my professions. Not just one, but many. I want to educate myself in more than one aspect of life. I want to delve into the rich, lush world we live in and devour it, share as much of it as I can with as many people as I can before I leave this Earth. I am so angered and infatuated, infuriated…in love with humanity. In love with this silly ball of light we live on.
My blood yearns for you.
It is a desperate pulse,
rattling against my rib cage
causing my bones to tremble.
I want to touch you.
Just graze my fingertips
across the surface of your
skin and I will burst into
a million shards of dancing light;
with your lips, body against mine
in the endless darkness,
I pray to become the source
of your heartbeat.
I can’t tell you how to change the world,
how to start a war, or more importantly-
how to end it. I can’t explain how love
works, why our hearts are drawn to
people they shouldn’t be, or why our
souls crave companionship. I can’t help
you to fix a clock, turn back time to tell
you things you wish you could have known
when we were only kids. I can’t tell you
how to pursue happiness, but I can tell
you that I’ve seen it—
In the early morning hours when I count
the freckles on your back, tracing constellations
into your olive colored skin, when I bury my
face into the soft crook of your neck and
I breathe in the wholeness of your soul, and
when your ocean eyes wash over my body
and rouse my spirit to the skies—
I can’t tell you how to pursue happiness,
but I can tell you that I’ve found it.
When I feel your heart
beating beneath my chest
I am reminded, once again,
of how small we really are.
Fragile are our human bodies,
so easily they can betray us
and how foolishly we can be
tricked into believing we will
live forever. But in the silence
of the night, as I listen to the
sound of your breath, I am
awed by our existence and,
despite the troubles we have
faced, I find myself falling in
love with you all over again.
